Use the Barkhausen effect to measure tensile or compressive forces
 

The Barkhausen effect is the physical phenomenon whereby a magnetic flux is induced inside a component of magnetisable material when it is exposed to a variable magnetic field. The induced magnetic flux does not vary continuously with respect to the variable magnetic field, but through discrete changes that, therefore, induce current pulses in a winding located near the component itself, which can be detected, amplified and recorded.
