Night Mobility System (NIMOS) in the Soldato Futuro program
Today’s war fighter requires to see pictures, video images, data from different sensors on the helmet mounted eye-piece for several purpose: shooting around the corner operations (using the images from the rifle sight), share information with a C2/C4i system, see and share targets data, display a digital map. The operational requirements dictate that the communication link among helmet mounted equipment and the others sensors/systems has to be wireless, but still has significant bandwidth capabilities and extended operating time on a single battery load. Selex ES (a Finmeccanica company) is responding to this needs with development of an advanced version of NIMOS, Night Mobility System. NIMOS is a modular, lightweight, Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) integrated with a imager intensifier sensor for soldier night mobility. NIMOS can receive real time image from rifle sight by wireless data link (or wired), it can also be integrated with the C2/C4i systems to directly display digital maps, coded messages and alarms, share snapshots, video and data with the C2/C4i. NIMOS is a fully integrated device mounted in the rear of all helmet sizes and protected by helmet mimetic fabric. The latest developments are concerning the state of the art of wireless technology, with the implementation of Bluetooth 4.0 for short range, low power connections and Wi-Fi 802.11 for long range and high bandwidth needs. In fact NIMOS is designed to be a “NET-centric” device integrate with several sub-systems: I2L tube, SVGA OLED color micro-display, 9 axis sensors and GPS module for navigation capabilities. The design is focused on low power dissipation, low weight and low size. This paper will discuss the resulting system architecture design and performance, a successful result of tradeoff made in this areas of bandwidth, range, security and reliability transmission, size and power to ensure a high performance wireless communication link associated to a high performance processing data device.
