Title
Reliable Power for CubeSats from Synergy
Abstract
Current solar panels available on the market are divided into two main families: high performances, reliability and cost systems for big size satellites and low cost systems for small/experimental satellites where reliability is not a major issue since the mission has a short lifetime. This picture is changing since many experimental missions require a high level of reliability and performances. To address this need Selex ES S.p.A and ISIS – Innovative Solutions In Space B.V. have been working together to provide a solution which try to bring together the advantages of high reliability and low cost systems. The major advantage deriving from this collaboration is the achievement of a cost reduction without endangering the quality level through the utilization of Selex ES deeply qualified mass production capability and ISIS ability in CubeSats marketing. This led to the launch on the market of CubeSat solar panels available in 1U, 2U and TOP form factors and offering integrated sensors (coarse photodiode for attitude determination and temperature sensor). The development of this new range of solar panels with unprecedented price/quality rate was only possible by merging the expertise of a veteran space company and the innovation of a young space company.
