Title
Mini 320, the miniaturized sight in Soldato Futuro Program
Abstract
"In the modern warfare the assault rifle has become a platform for optronic sight able to increase hit probability and the reliability of the weapon and to reduce the time of engagement. The requirements for the development of such systems are the Size, Weight and Power considerations (SWaP) and the distance of engagement of the target. The experience gained so far by Selex ES (a Finmeccanica Company) shows that the state of the art technology for this kind of device is the pocket scope design, in order to obtain the best compromise between performances and weight of the equipment. The latest developments made by Selex ES are responding precisely to the above-mentioned trend, through a miniaturized Day/Night sight, Mini 320, embedding state-of-the art sensors that also maintain the NET-centric capability from previous Selex ES sight systems, i.e. the integration in a network via wireless (but also wired) connection allowing the soldier to exchange information (images, video and data) with other devices. Mini Sight 320 is a phone cell size (118 x 64 x 41 mm) thermal and visible monocular that displays a true 320x240 pixels (IR micro-bolometer Detector) and a 640x480 pixels (full HD day camera) resolution; thanks to the standard protocols (USB 2.0 HS, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi) the system can be interfaced with several devices such as PDAs, wearable computers, etc. The integration of the sight into a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) provides a number of additional capabilities like the โshoot around the cornerโ feature, increasing the situational awareness without decrease the level of safety of the user. Mini Sight 320 is typically used in a weapon mounted configuration but can be used also as an hand-held pocket scope or helmet mounted system. "
