High Efficiency Active Clamp Buck Converter for Space Applications
This paper presents a high efficiency DC/DC converter architecture able to generate 28V power bus from 120V input bus voltage. The core of DC/DC board is a Buck converter with active clamp circuit using auxiliary MOSFET. The active clamp technique allows to Main and Auxiliary MOSFETs to be turned on in zero voltage switching condition reducing switching losses and consequently improving the efficiency. The design has been thought to use two DC/DC converters working in cross strapping, making the solution able to provide output power up to 1.12kW. A 560W prototype (half board using one channel) was built and experimental results give almost 94% of efficiency (at 90V input bus voltage) at full load. The challenge of the proposed architecture is to have high efficiency and high power density; for this purpose 265 mm x 240 mm, 12 layers PCB has been used.
