A new RF Beamforming Network based on continuous phase shifting for Ka Band Satellite on the Move Terminal
The main issue of this paper is focused on the Beamforming Network utilized on the new generation of Satellite on the Move (SOTM) Terminal, operating in Ka band. These terminals will be employed on suitable vehicles and shall maintain active the satellite link in any movement condition. Due to the very narrow beam at Ka band, it is mandatory to apply a fine phase variation as to allow the satellite tracking during the movement of the vehicle. The phase shifting in the Tx and Rx modules is achieved at RF level by means of an innovative technique based on a continuous analog phase shifter, as to guarantee the full 360° coverage for the antenna phased array elements. An original low cost engineering solution has been adopted for the integration of the analog RF phase shifters on the Tx and Rx modules.
