Titolo Scheduled Maintenance Program Development for the AW609 Tiltrotor via the Maintenance Review Board Process Utilizing MSG-3

Abstract

Since the dawn of the airline industry, methods have been developed to uphold the inherent safety and reliability of aircraft so that ownership of such aircraft should remain justifiable to the operators. One current standard for the development of an effective scheduled maintenance program for multiple category aircraft is through a Maintenance Review Board (MRB) utilizing the Maintenance Steering Group – Third Task (MSG-3) approach. AgustaWestland Philadelphia Corporation is currently in the process of certifying the AW609 tiltrotor, which will be the first new category of aircraft certificated by the FAA since 1963. In accordance with certification requirements to prepare Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) that are deemed to be acceptable by the FAA, which includes scheduled maintenance instructions, the AW609 is undergoing an MRB process. The unique scenarios and challenges confronted during an MRB process for a new category aircraft provide valuable lessons learned for an industry which continuously seeks to improve the MSG-3 methodology and maintenance program development in general.
