Innovative Measurement Methods for Homeland Security Applications
Abstract
In this paper are proposed innovative measurements methods to detect and track humans beyond walls by RF electromagnetic approach and to detect people inside closed metallic structure by acoustic approach. The solution based on electromagnetic waves is a complex architectural solution that integrates two different measurements methods to perform different functions. The first function is the detection and tracking of moving targets in two-dimensional scenes, it exploits an advanced imaging technique, which takes advantages from a regularized linear inversion scheme. The second method has been developed for life signs detection and it takes advantage from a suitable spatial smoothing strategy applied to the traditional algorithm for Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC), mandated to single out the spectral components of the received signal. However, all the methods based on electromagnetic waves for the detection of life signs fails when applied to signal associated with metallic structure due to the limited penetration depth and multiple reflections of radio signals in structures mainly made through metallic materials. Stemming from this consideration the authors present hereinafter a new method capable of detecting and recognizing vital signs, typical of human beings, thanks to the use of a suitable data acquisition system, based on a geophones network, and a proper digital signal processing algorithm.
