Fully Automated IR Target Search and Recognition Processor
Abstract
Modern UCAVs (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) require being equipped with high performance technologies. One of the important tasks of the nEUROn, the European full-scale demonstrator for Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle, is the fully autonomous mission sequence, composed by scan of a ground ROI (Region of Interest), automatic target detection, tracking and automatic target recognition in the MWIR (Medium Wavelength InfraRed) bandwidth. A specific real time processing unit, the Electro Optical Processor (EOP), has been developed to fulfill the above described requirements. EOP has been designed by Selex ES to provide optimized target detection, tracking and recognition, suitably piloting the onboard IR sensor with the strong constraint of a limited available time for a quick and effective operation during flight. The recognition process, the most challenging task required, has been developed exploiting the modern automatic techniques. The development and test phases have been conducted with a large number of algorithms training sessions based both on real targets and synthetic images with different backgrounds. Moving from laboratory testing to the real word, specific flight test campaigns have been performed demonstrating the success of the ideas behind the project.
