Titolo AWHero Rotary UAS: Integration Activities and Flight Testing for Shipborne Operations

Abstract

AWHero is a Tactical Rotary Unmanned Aerial System (RUAS) consisting of a 200kg class Rotorcraft Aerial Vehicle (AV) controlled by the Flight Control System (FCS) through the Unmanned Control Station (UCS). The UCS communicates with the AV through a Data Link System in order to Command and Control the AV, manage the On-Board Payload and receive sensors data. The Data Link System is composed by two separated encrypted data links, each one with its own receiver and transmitter that allows to segregate safety critical Command and Control communication form the On-Board Payload management and sensors downlink. OCEAN2020 (Open Cooperation for European mAritime awareNess), is was a Project funded by the European Union’s Preparatory Action on Defence Research and implemented by the European Defence Agency (under grant agreement No 801697), with the main objective to test and demonstrate enhanced situational awareness in a maritime environment with the integration of legacy and new technologies for unmanned systems through the collaboration of maritime domain technical specialists covering all “observing, orienting, deciding and acting” operational tasks. The team, coordinated by Leonardo and involving 43 entities, wasis drawn from 15 countries across Europe. In particular, the OCEAN2020 Consortium has addressed the problems of integrating EU systems and individual organizations into a coherent framework. These activities culminated with operational demonstrations in the Mediterranean and Baltic seas contributing to the EU’s ability to lead innovation in support of Europe’s strategic autonomy in the maritime domain.
